Land Rover has officially entered the rally-raid arena, unveiling the Defender Dakar D7X-R prototype after successful testing in Morocco's challenging Sahara Desert. This marks a significant milestone as the Defender brand prepares to compete in the 2026 Dakar Rally and the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC).

What’s Under the Hood?

The Defender Dakar D7X-R is built on the robust Defender OCTA platform, featuring the same D7x body architecture, transmission, and driveline layout as the production model. Equipped with a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, the prototype is designed to excel in the 'Stock' category, emphasizing production-based vehicles. This approach underscores Land Rover's commitment to showcasing the durability and performance of its production vehicles in extreme conditions. 

Meet the Drivers

Leading the charge is Stéphane Peterhansel, renowned as 'Mr. Dakar' with 14 Dakar Rally victories to his name. At 60, Peterhansel returns to the rally scene, bringing a wealth of experience and determination to the team. Joining him is 25-year-old Lithuanian driver Rokas Baciuška, a rising star with podium finishes in the W2RC and previous Dakar experience. Together, they form a formidable duo aiming to make a significant impact in the upcoming rally seasons.

A Commitment to Rally-Raid Excellence

Land Rover's involvement extends beyond participation. As the official car partner of the Dakar Rally from 2025, Defender will supply a fleet of support vehicles for rally officials and media until 2028, along with six specialized reconnaissance vehicles. This partnership highlights Defender's dedication to supporting the rally's operations while demonstrating the capabilities of its vehicles in real-world conditions.
