Defender OCTA Launches JCB Hydromax to a Land Speed Record!

The Defender OCTA just added something new to its résumé: land speed record duty! The fastest and most powerful Defender ever built played a starring role in a brand new land speed record for a hydrogen combustion vehicle, out on the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats!

The Job: Push a 2,550kg Car to 60mph, in Under 300m

The JCB Hydromax is a hydrogen-powered land speed contender, and under FIA and Southern California Timing Association rules it's allowed a push start of up to 300m to get up to speed. JCB's engineers picked a Defender OCTA fitted with a bespoke push plate to do the job - and it wasn't even close to a stretch for it.


The numbers tell the story:

2,550kg - weight of the JCB Hydromax, pushed from a dead stop
300m - maximum distance allowed for the push start
60mph - target speed before Hydromax could take over under its own power
Up to 2,244m (7,365ft) - effective altitude density at Bonneville as temperatures climbed through the day
406.320mph - the new FIA world hydrogen land speed record, set by Andy Green OBE

The Winch Mount Does Double Duty

Here's the bit that got our attention at NDM. The push plate wasn't some bolted-on afterthought - it was built straight off OCTA's factory winch mount! Engineers disabled the mount's crumple zone, added extra fixing points and a brace bar back to the front recovery point, then load-tested it well beyond anything the record runs would actually throw at it.

Same mounting point our customers use for real winches and recovery gear, just pushed to a very different extreme.


6D Dynamics Kept Its Cool Under Load

Bolt several hundred kilograms onto the nose of most vehicles and floor it, and you're looking at nose-dive and body roll. Not OCTA. Its 6D Dynamics suspension - hydraulically-interlinked, continuously variable, semi-active dampers - held the push plate dead level under hard acceleration, no extra ballast required.

Ian Johnson, Engineering Delivery Director: "We wondered if we'd need to ballast the OCTA, but 6D Dynamics kept everything level without adding weight."

And once the push was done, OCTA wasn't finished - its all-terrain pace let it get back across the salt flats fast, ready for the return run, often miles from where it started.

The Result

JCB Hydromax set a new Southern California Timing Association Speed Record and FIA world hydrogen land speed record at 406.320mph, driven by world land speed record holder Andy Green OBE!

What This Means for OCTA Owners

You're probably not pushing a hydrogen streamliner across a salt flat this weekend, but this is a solid reminder of what's already underneath a stock OCTA. The chassis that the push plate bolted to is the same chassis that your OCTA's winch tray bolts to. That 6D Dynamic suspension keeping a loaded nose level at speed is the same system working for you on your next off-road trip. Land Rover's engineers pushed the platform to a genuine world record - the standard vehicle was already up to it. All of this goes to show just how tough Defenders are built straight from the factory!
