Defender Dakar Revealed! The Road-Legal Version of the Dakar Rally Winner Is Coming!

They actually did it. Land Rover has just revealed the Defender Dakar, a road-legal evolution of the D7X-R race car that won the 2026 Dakar Rally on its very first attempt. A Design Preview Model was unveiled overnight at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, during Monterey Car Week in California on 14 August 2026. Here is everything you need to know.

From Race Winner to Road Car

If you have been following our Dakar coverage, you know the backstory. The Defender D7X-R made history in January, with the three-car factory team finishing first, second and fourth in the new Stock class after 14 days of brutal competition, and taking a 1-2-3 result on 10 of the 13 stages. The three cars covered a combined 24,000km without breaking.
Now Land Rover has asked the obvious next question: what if you could drive that thing to the shops?

The Defender Dakar is the answer. It keeps the same D7x body architecture, transmission and driveline as the competition car, all of which is based on the Defender OCTA. And here is the headline number: the 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 will be unrestricted from race regulations, unleashing its full 635PS (626hp) and 750Nm of torque, with upgraded cooling to match.

What Makes It Different From an OCTA?

This is where it gets interesting for anyone who knows the OCTA platform. Confirmed changes include:

  • Wider track and increased ride height with uprated geometry inspired by the winning D7X-R 35-inch tyre package with Advanced All-Terrain tyres on new forged 20-inch wheels!
  • Coil suspension with motorsport-proven Bilstein Advanced Dampers. Yes, coils, not air!
  • New Dunes and Gravel drive modes, plus the Flight Mode originally developed for the race car to manage smooth landings when the vehicle leaves the ground
  • Roof-mounted light pods and a fixed metal roof!
  • Carbon fibre bonnet and carbon fibre raised air intakes!
  • Extended wheel arches with exposed rivets, tailgate blanking plate and signature mud flaps Enhanced metal front under shield and
    underbody protection!

Inside, the Dakar gets a 2+2 seating layout with race seats designed specifically for this model, optional four-point racing harnesses, rear stowage sized for race helmets, and a purpose-engineered loadspace mounting for the spare wheel and air compressor.

The Look

Colour options are headlined by the signature Dakar Sand body with Yanbu Turquoise roof, straight off the race-winning D7X-R livery. Narvik Black and Alaska White will also be offered, with an optional Matte Protective Film on those two colours.

What Mark Cameron Says

Defender Managing Director Mark Cameron summed up the brief: the team evolved the OCTA into the D7X R, then asked whether the Dakar-winning car could be
made road legal. He called the result the ultimate expression of adventure and an authentic Defender made from unstoppable DNA.

When Can You Get One?

Registrations of interest are open now, with reservations available from early 2027. Full technical details and specifications will be revealed at the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.
What we do not know yet, because Land Rover has not announced it: pricing, exact build numbers beyond "limited-run", and Australian market allocation. We will update as soon as any of that lands.

Why This Matters for OCTA Owners!

Our take: the Defender Dakar validates everything the rally program has been proving about the OCTA platform. The same body architecture, driveline and V8 that survived 24,000km of Dakar punishment sit under every OCTA on the road today. And with factory fit 35s, coil conversion, light pods and serious underbody armour now appearing on an official Land Rover product, the direction of travel for the whole modification scene is clear.

This is the wildest factory Defender ever announced, and we cannot wait to get our hands on one!

Stay tuned for full specs after the 2027 Dakar Rally reveal!
